Description
While out for a drive on a winter day in rural Muskoka Ontario, this barn on the Windermere Road caught my eye.
Muskoka lies amid the Canadian Shield, which means rocks and more rocks and limited soil.
While Muskoka has some areas good for farming, many of the early settlers found farming their land a challenge to say the least. Many of them turned to lumbering and tourism when their farms could not sustain them. The lumber industry has long since faded, but tourism has driven the Muskoka economy for many years, thanks to thousands of vacation cottages and numerous resorts on the hundreds of lakes in the region.
