Description
We took a dinner cruise on the restored Bigwin Ferry on Lake of Bays Ontario one evening. The cruise took us to the Port Cunnington Lodge & Resort where we had an excellent dinner, followed by a sunset cruise back to our starting point In Dorset.
Bigwin Inn on the Lake of Bays in Muskoka Ontario was a destination for over 40 years following its opening in 1920. The inn was on Bigwin Island, necessitating that all guests arrive by boat. In the heyday of the inn, the SS Bigwin carried numerous celebrities including Louis Armstrong, Clark Gable, Greta Garbo, and Winston Churchill. The Dutch Royal Family spent summers on the island during WW II.
After the resort closed in 1966, the ferry became partially submerged and remained there, resting on the bottom of the lake for many years. Eventually she was purchased by a volunteer group and over a number of years was lovingly restored. The Bigwin Ferry was re-launched in 2013 and though is no longer steam powered, is once again cruising the Lake of Bays.
