The RMS Segwun and the Wenonah II are seen docked at the wharf in Gravenhurst, Ontario. Both ships are operated for excursions, mainly on Lake Muskoka. However, they do at times go through the locks in Port Carling to sail on Lakes Rosseau and Joseph.
The Segwun is the oldest steam vessel still operating in North America. She started life in 1887as the SS Nipissing, a paddle-wheel steamship, but in 1925 was converted to a propeller driven steamship and renamed the RMS Segwun. RMS signifies that she is a Royal Mail Ship, one of only three such ships left in the world. The Segwun (meaning 'springtime' in Ojibwa) sailed the Muskoka lakes until 1958 when she was retired. She remained moored at the town dock in Gravenhurst until 1972, when she began a ten year restoration. Since then she has once again been in service on the three big Muskoka lakes.
The Wenonah II is a modern vessel, launched in 2001 as a companion to the Segwun in the tourist business. While she looks...
My main photography interests are landscapes and wildlife and my camera is never far from me. I live in Muskoka, the heart of Ontario's 'cottage country' and this provides endless photo opportunities. When I travel, I love to capture my away experiences on camera and bring them home with me.
