Description
As I was sitting on the dock at the cottage on Lake Muskoka in Ontario, the loon popped to the surface quite close by. The black and white plumage stood out against the blue water of the lake. You can see the loon's red eye in this image.
The red eye of the loon is the result of a pigment which allows the loon to see better when under water. Loons are capable of diving to depths of 70 metres and can stay under for as long as three minutes. However, dives are generally shallower and shorter. The haunting call of the loon seems quintessentially Canadian to me.

The loons are such beautiful birds and I love hearing their mournful vocals, especially in the early morning or evening. Great wildlife ccapture, Andres. L/fv/pin
