Description
The colourful houses in the Jelly Bean Row neighbourhood of St John's, Newfoundland are great photographic subjects. Those who are not familiar with this area of St John's often think that Jelly Bean Row refers to one street in the city, but it does in fact refer to an entire neighbourhood.
One might inquire as to how the tradition of these brightly coloured houses began. In fact no one really knows the answer to this question. Fog is not uncommon in Newfoundland; according to one story, the fishermen in the outports painted their houses in bright colours many years ago so that they could more easily find their way home in the fog. Newfoundland tales apparently become truer with time.

Great image, Andrew. I never did make it to New Foundland. On my wish list for my next lifetime. I did enjoy New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, when I lived in Maine. So laid back and friendly. lf

I think it's marvelous that all the people living there are happy with this unusual painting of their homes. L/F
